SUMMARY:An Introduction to Spatial Thinking and Analysis using R as a Crime Mapping Tool
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” overlay_strength=”0.3″ shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_link_target=”_self” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” width=”1/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” overlay_strength=”0.3″ column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column_text]This workshop offers a hands-on introduction to spatial analysis using R. Participants will work through a series of guided examples using editable code to learn about topics such as defining units of analysis, spatial data structures (points, lines, and polygons) and their manipulation and visualisation, and the role of spatial dependence.
No prior knowledge is assumed, but participants are advised to read the preparatory material that will be provided and attend the workshop with a laptop or tablet. If you have R and R Studio installed, you will have more autonomy to edit the examples, but it will be possible to follow along without this too. [/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Outcomes
By the end of the workshop, participants will have developed their understanding of the relationship between spatial representation, analytical decisions, and interpretation, and how these can be implemented in R.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Contributors

Dr Reka Solymosi is a Senior Lecturer in Quantitative Methods at the University of Manchester’s Department of Criminology. She is a member of the Software Sustainability Institute and an Honorary Lecturer at University College London. Reka’s research uses innovative data collection methods such as crowdsourced perceptions, real-time surveys using apps, and physiological measures to study issues including crime, victimisation and urban safety.
Prof Jose Pina-Sánchez is Professor in Quantitative Criminology at the University of Leeds, and Director of Advanced Quantitative Methods (AQM) for the WRDTP.

Failure to do so may result in the cost of your place being deducted from your RTSG (if you are funded by the WRDTP), or a charge being made to your department (if you are not funded by the WRDTP).
