SUMMARY:Opening the Black Box: Social Science Approaches to Studying Automated Decision-Making by AI

As algorithms and artificial intelligence are increasingly involved in forms of automated decision-making, social scientists face an urgent task of critically examining their design, deployment and societal impacts.
This workshop will introduce participants to methodological approaches from ethnography to quantitative auditing as they are applied to this field of study. Focusing on the domains of policing and criminal justice, we will examine how data dashboards, predictive policing tools and automated risk-assessments reshape accountability, bias and organisational culture. The core of the workshop will provide an overview of the field, and there will be an open forum at the end in which participants will have the opportunity to discuss examples from their own research.
This event will be of relevance to any PhD student interested in the role of automated decision making in bureaucratic organisations, particularly within the criminal justice system.
[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Outcomes
Participants will:

Have an overview of social science approaches to studying automated decision-making;
Understand limitations of different perspectives;
Sharpen research sensibility to the role of technologies in shaping the social world.

Dr Daniel Marciniak is a Lecturer in Criminology at the University of Hull, and Deputy Director of the Security, Conflict and Justice (SCJ) Pathway for the WRDTP. He has extensively researched the development and deployment of predictive policing tools in the US and UK, as well as other forms of knowledge technologies in policing. He employs ethnographic and quantitative methods in understanding the systems he studies.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” overlay_strength=”0.3″ shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_link_target=”_self” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” width=”1/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” overlay_strength=”0.3″ column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”none”][carousel script=”carouFredSel” easing=”linear”][item id=”1793202252237-3″ tab_id=”1793202252238-2″ title=”Item”][team_member image_url=”12439″ team_memeber_style=”meta_below” link_element=”both” team_member_link_new_tab=”true” color=”Accent-Color” name=”Dr Daniel Marciniak” job_position=”Deputy Director of Security, Conflict and Justice (SCJ), WRDTP” link_url=”https://www.hull.ac.uk/staff-directory/daniel-marciniak”][/item][/carousel][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” overlay_strength=”0.3″ shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_link_target=”_self” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” width=”1/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” overlay_strength=”0.3″ column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”none”][divider line_type=”No Line”][vc_column_text]
