Research interests: Gender and feminism in Chinese contexts, promotional media and culture
I am a PhD student in the School of Media and Communication at the University of Leeds. I am interested in how gender politics is produced and communicated in openly ‘pro-woman’ texts, and in turn how it may be understood in relation to broader patterns surrounding ‘women’ and media.
My PhD focuses on nüxing yingxiao in digital media, a particular kind of ‘pro-woman’ advertising, and seeks to explore the ways in which certain gendered consumer subjects and culture may be produced and harnessed by brands in the contemporary Chinese context. I will be interviewing marketing workers and experts in China, and conducting discourse and circulation analyses of ‘pro-woman’ digital ads.
Before this, I was a research assistant in the Department of Sociology at the University of Hong Kong. I completed my MA in international communication at the University of Leeds, and BBA in marketing and accounting at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.
I am happy to hear from you about your experiences here, and any feedback or questions.
