‘Introduction to Finding and Using Data’ online course

Want to find out more about finding and using data for social research?

Social sciences researchers at WRDTP universities have access to a free online course – ‘Introduction to Finding and Using Data’ – that provides insight into key topics relating to the use of data for social research. Whether looking for data for a research project, or wondering how to get started with data, this online course is a guide for doctoral researchers. 

From the course, you can learn about: 

  • the main types and sources of data for social research 
  • the UK Data Service and the training and support available 
  • practical information and tools to help you find suitable data for a project 
  • ethical issues when sourcing data 
  • what to consider when starting data analysis  

The course has been designed for doctoral researchers by the UK Data Service in collaboration with the White Rose Doctoral Training Partnership, Midlands Graduate School and the Scottish Graduate School of Social Science.

What does the course include?

The online course includes five online asynchronous modules. Each module contains sections on key topics with videos, quizzes, and hands-on exercises. You can access the online modules in your own time, dipping in and out as needed. Complete all modules and receive a certificate of completion

How to access the course

The course is hosted on OpenEssex Moodle. On the OpenEssex platform you will need to register/log-in. You can use single sign-on to register using your university email address. Note that the name you provide upon registration will be the name used on the completion certificate when you complete the course. If you have any problems registering onto the course, please contact the UK Data Service for help (email: ukdstraining@manchester.ac.uk), quoting ‘WRDTP’ in the subject of your email.

Your data

OpenEssex collects personal information you give on registration and on your interactions with the course materials. To evaluate the course, the UK Data Service, will access and analyse anonymised data on usage. The UK Data Service may also process and pass on to the White Rose DTP: your name and the modules accessed and completed. No information will be used to assess individual participation or performance.
