Writing your First Research Article (Session 1 of 3)

This is a series of three online workshops, taking place on Friday 27th February, Friday 6th March and Friday 13th March 2026. As attendance is expected at all three workshops, please note that participants should register before the first workshop in the series (and do not need to register separately for the following sessions).

This series of three workshops will prepare you to write your first research article for publication in an international journal. The workshops will involve analysis tasks, writing tasks, individual and group work. Homework tasks will also be set.

The series is suitable for doctoral researchers from all Interdisciplinary Pathways and specialisms within the social sciences, and is open to all social science PGRs from the WRDTP’s seven partner universities.

Outline of Sessions

  • Session 1 (Friday 27th February, 13:00-15:30): Choosing a journal and preparing to write;
  • Session 2 (Friday 6th March, 13:00-15:30): Tailoring your writing to your journal;
  • Session 3 (Friday 13th March, 13:00-15:30): Dealing with the peer review process.

Outcomes

In this series of workshops, you will learn:

  • How to select a journal for your paper;
  • The importance of tailoring your writing to your specific journal, and how to do this;
  • How to deal with reviewer comments.

Contributors

Dr Lisa McGrath is Associate Professor in Education Linguistics at the Sheffield Institute of Education (and Deputy Director of the Education, Childhood and Youth Pathway for the WRDTP). She has taught writing for publication around Europe and published widely on the topic.

This series of three workshops will take place online only.
