Writing an ECY Journal Article: Away Day

This interactive workshop, led by Dr Lisa McGrath from Sheffield Hallam University, will focus on writing for publication in Education, Childhood and Youth journals.

The session is designed to support doctoral researchers in developing, refining, and submitting journal articles. It will explore how to identify the right journal, shape a strong argument, and demystify the publishing process. Dr McGrath will share practical strategies for responding to reviewers’ feedback and navigating the peer review process with confidence.

Participants will have the opportunity to reflect on their own writing projects, consider common challenges in moving from thesis to publication, and gain insights into writing with clarity and impact. Whether you are preparing your first article or revising a draft for submission, this session will provide valuable guidance, practical tools, and space for discussion with peers.

This event will be followed by an Education, Childhood and Youth Writing Retreat in Leeds on Wednesday 10th June. You are encouraged to attend both events if possible, although this is not a requirement.

Contributors

Dr Lisa McGrath is an Associate Professor of Educational Linguistics at the Sheffield Institute of Education, Sheffield Hallam University. Her work focuses on academic writing, writing for research purposes, genre pedagogy, and higher education learning and development in academic literacy, with research on how students and junior scholars become effective writers published in leading journals and implemented in university writing classrooms across Europe and the United States. She is also Deputy Director of the Education, Childhood and Youth (ECY) Pathway for the WRDTP.

Please note: The WRDTP is committed to sustainability and to reducing the waste from excess catering at events. A key challenge here is non-attendance at events. From October 1st 2025, the WRDTP will be changing the way we manage the non-attendance of PGR students who have booked place/s at WRDTP Training events. Any PGR student who does not inform the WRDTP (via training@wrdtp.ac.uk) that they will not be able to attend a WRDTP event at least 3 working days before the event takes place will have the cost of their place deducted from their RTSG (if a WRDTP-funded student), or have this charged to their department (if not funded by the WRDTP). This will allow us to better plan for events and to avoid catering waste. Thank you in advance for your cooperation on this matter.

This is an in-person event at Sheffield Hallam University.

This event is open to members of WRDTP partner institutions only.

Bookings will close at 9:00am on Wednesday 27th May.

When booking your place, we ask that you use your institutional (.ac.uk) email address and complete all fields of the booking form. Thank you for your understanding.
