Writing and Publishing your First Research Article (Session 2/3)
This series of online workshops will take place on Thursday 3rd, Thursday 10th and Thursday 17th December 2026. Attendance is expected at all three workshops, with activities to complete between each session. Participants only need to register once, before the first workshop, and do not need to register separately for the following sessions. Please only register if you are confident that you will be able to attend all three sessions in the series. In the event of high demand, priority may be given to later-stage PGRs funded by the ESRC/WRDTP.
In this three-part series of workshops, you will learn how to write and publish your first research article. You will learn how to select a journal, how to tailor your writing to that journal and how to deal with reviewer comments. You will learn through a series of individual and small group tasks, and will receive feedback on tasks set between sessions.
This workshop series is suitable for PGRs from all Pathways and disciplines in the social sciences. It will be most beneficial to those who have already collected their data and are ready to start publishing (particularly those in years 3-4 of their PhD).
In advance of the first session, please let your supervisor know you are taking part in this workshop and the idea you have for your first paper, as well as asking them to recommend three journals that you could target as publication outlets (and their reasons for recommending those specific journals).
Outcomes
Participants will learn how to:
- Select an appropriate journal for their research;
- How to tailor your writing to that journal;
- How to deal with reviewer comments.
