Research and career:
Current job title:
Lecturer at Manchester Metropolitan University (Sector: Higher Education / Academia)
Give a brief overview of your current role and responsibilities:
I am a Lecturer in Sociology where I teach Theory Modules and Research Modules, including Quantitative and Qualitative Methods.
Describe your journey from your PhD to your current role:
I gained teaching experiences throughout my PhD and found a permanent role after completion.
In what way did your experience with the WRDTP prepare you for your current career?
By enabling me to complete my PhD journey without major financial concerns and by providing me with the training and networking opportunities that have helped me to think beyond disciplines in both my research and teaching as a Lecturer.
What advice would you give to current or future WRDTP postgraduate researchers?
Embrace it all. Prioritise your thesis and remember that the more time you put into that, the more you will learn, the better your thesis will be, and the more of an expert you will be at the end. You should also get involved with as many training and networking opportunities as possible as these will broaden your perspective, enhance your skillset, and increase your chances of finding and securing further opportunities. The journey will be challenging but that’s a large part of the reason why it’s worth pursuing in the first place and sticking with when times get tough!
