
Digital Methods for Feminist Research
Drawing on their own research projects, the two speakers at this event will talk through their respective methodological approaches and challenges in studying and making sense of feminist movements in the global south using digital concepts and analytical tools.
Dr Gabriela Silva Loureiro is a queer scholar from Brazil who is passionate about the conditions necessary to create better awareness, identification and conditions for building solidarity within and across communities and thus promote social justice. Her main research interests orbit around feminism, queer studies, antiracism, decoloniality, and emotions. She currently works as a lecturer in sociology at the University of Wollongong (Australia), having held previous teaching and research positions in the UK.
Radhika Gajjala is a Professor of Media and Communication and of American Culture Studies at Bowling Green State University, USA. Her published work engages themes related to globalization, digital labour, feminism and social justice. Her published books include ‘Digital Diasporas’ (Rowman and Littlefield International 2019), ‘Online Philanthropy’ (Lexington Press 2017), ‘Cyberculture and the Subaltern’ (Lexington Press, 2012) and ‘Cyberselves: Feminist Ethnographies of South Asian Women’ (Altamira, 2004). She has also co-edited collections including ‘Cyberfeminism 2.0’ (Peter Lang, 2012), ‘Global Media Culture and Identity’ (Routledge, 2011), ‘South Asian Technospaces’ (Peter Lang, 2008) and ‘Webbing Cyberfeminist Practice’ (Hampton Press, 2008).
Outcomes
Attendees will gain:
- An understanding of feminist perspectives within the field of digital media and societies;
- An introduction to decolonial and postcolonial approaches to data and power;
- An introduction to the practical opportunities and challenges involved in conducting feminist research utilising digital methods.
