Situated Speculations and Critical Place-Based Research Methods

This training, aimed at PGRs in their 1st or 2nd year of study, will introduce participants to speculative thinking in connection with place-based research through key literature and a series of experiments in moving, speculating and writing. Participants will:

  • Discuss key theorists and ideas related to speculative thought and critical fabulation;
  • Discuss critical approaches to place-based research;
  • Participate in in-situ field experiments that generate engagement in speculative thinking about place and the future;
  • Practise thinking through their own approach to research in conversation with speculative literatures.

This training may be of your interest if you are seeking to develop conceptual and methodological knowledge and techniques around one, or several, of these areas:

  • Speculative fiction and speculative thought as they relate to research methods;
  • Placed-based research, mobile research, or public pedagogies research;
  • Researching school or institutional environments with a focus on ecological, social, or futures thinking using methods beyond interviews or testimonies;
  • Learning more about modes of ethnographic collaboration;
  • Developing methodological approaches to research aligned with literary speculation, affect theories, and feminist materialism.

This training session will be delivered in person at the University of Sheffield.

Bookings will close at 9am on Friday 25th April.

Please book a place only if you are sure that you will be able to attend.

When booking, you must use your institutional (.ac.uk) email address and complete all fields of the booking form. Your booking will otherwise be cancelled, and you will need to re-book. Thank you for your understanding.
