Planning and Conducting Qualitative Research with Top-Tier Business and Management Journals in Mind

Qualitative research is gaining legitimacy across the sub-fields of business and management academe, as indicated by a steady increase in numbers of published qualitative studies. Nevertheless, designing and publishing qualitative research in top-tier journals can be a challenge, as several reviews of qualitative publications in different management disciplines demonstrate. This workshop is intended to help postgraduate researchers employing qualitative methods to be aware of practices and procedures that leading journals expect from qualitative work to be published at this level.

In the seminar, Professor Eva Kipnis will reflect on her experiences of publishing and reviewing qualitative research and make recommendations for planning, implementing and writing up a qualitative study targeting a high-quality management journal. Eva will demonstrate methodological designs and techniques, as well as approaches to structuring a qualitative paper. She will also present a synthesis of recommendations drawn from several management journals.

Outcomes

Participants in this workshop will:

  • Understand quality expectations to qualitative studies applied by leading management journals;
  • Learn about developing multi-stage and multi-method qualitative designs;
  • Receive practical tips on evidencing rigour by presenting findings in multiple formats;
  • Have an opportunity to ask questions and receive guidance on publications they are planning.
