
Applying for Your First Research Grant: Practical Advice for Post-PhD Funding
This introductory session on research grant funding will cover:
- A brief introduction to the research grant funding landscape (focusing mainly on Research Council and charity funding);
- Practical tips when applying for your first research grant;
- Understanding what funding bodies are looking for;
- Hearing from an early-career researcher about their own experiences of applying for grant funding.
Outcomes
Participants will:
- Gain an awareness of the research grant funding environment;
- Be able to start thinking early about how to shape a research grant application;
- Gain an awareness of what grant funding bodies are typically looking for;
- Hear first hand from an ECR who has applied for (and been awarded) grant funding to develop a research idea and begin the trajectory of building up their track record.
Contributors
Dr Steve Parkes is a Senior Research Fellow in the Centre for Regional Economic and Social Research (CRESR) at Sheffield Hallam University, and a Deputy Director of the WRDTP’s SPEL Pathway.
Dawn Witherley is Research Culture Manager in the Centre for Regional Economic and Social Research (CRESR) at Sheffield Hallam University. She has over 15 years’ experience working in Professional Services Research Support.
