Introduction to Social Science Research Careers

This session introduces the various paths that PhD researchers can take if they wish to continue doing social science research, whether within academia, or beyond. It will give an overview of the sorts of careers that exist for postdoctoral graduates, help you to understand the transferable skills that you gain during your PhD and how they can feed into future careers, and include discussion around your hopes, expectations and concerns about potential careers to come after your PhD.

Outcomes

In this session, you will:

  • Develop your awareness of the range of careers that exist in social science research;
  • Have the opportunity to consider your own career aspirations;
  • Recognise the transferable skills that you acquire in a PhD, and how those will help you in you in your future career.

Contributors

Dr Mic Martin is a Lecturer in Urban Design and Planning at the University of Sheffield. His research and teaching are concerned with a variety of phenomena associated with the design, planning and development of cities, including urban crises, austerity urbanism, vacant/previously developed land, urban regeneration and temporary use, child-friendly cities, children’s place use and urban design/placeshaping processes.
