About the Placement

As a membership organisation that was completely overhauled 10 years ago, we wanted to conduct an evaluation of the impact we have had on our members in relation to our Theory of Change.

What was the most significant outcome or deliverable achieved during the placement?

Results from the project have helped us to reconsider how we market our membership and how we work more closely with our more engaged members.

What was the most challenging aspect of supervising/hosting a placement, and how did you address it?

Finding the extra time for supervision and regular meetings, but our placement student was very independent and competent, so this had a minimal impact.

What tips or advice would you give to current or future host organisations interested in undertaking a placement?

Take the time to interview the placement student to ensure their previous expertise and experience matches the requirements of the post. We found that it was really important that our placement student already knew the sector we operate in – while research skills are important, the ability to link findings to the wider context they have collected data in is essential for the placement to be truly meaningful.
