A Field Guide to Non-Academic Job Hunting
Being well-prepared is the key to purposeful and successful job hunting.
This is a very practical workshop, so you will need to bring a job ad that interests you and we will help you analyse the transferable and technical skills and essential and desirable skills they are looking for so you can assess how well you match. Some recruiters make it very easy to understand what they are looking for, but others don’t! The purpose is to reduce your stress when sifting through many job applications and help you set your sights on the ones that really hit all the right buttons for you. Then, with a greater understanding of what recruiters are looking for, this workshop will also help you prepare for the types of questions you might be asked, and how you can prepare to answer them.
The workshop uses a blend of instruction, individual work and ‘rehearsal’ in pairs. Participants will have the opportunity to prepare real answers to real interview questions, and receive feedback from their partner.
Pre-workshop Preparation:
Before attending, you will need to complete an online sorting exercise to classify key transferable skills into a grid relating to enjoyment and level of skill. You will also need to have a specific job advertisement handy to work on during the workshop.
Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Interrogate different types of job advertisements to pull out key skills employers are looking for;
- Identify specialist and transferable skills in job advertisements;
- Identify which skills are essential and which are desirable, even where this is not explicit;
- Match their own level of skill to that being sought in advertisements;
- Have a toolkit of options to prepare to answer different types of interview questions.
This event will take place online only and will not be recorded. Students who book a place will be sent a Zoom link via email.
