Sharing Sensitive and Qualitative Data Openly

In this 2-hour session for those new to sharing sensitive and qualitative data openly, we will cover a range of topics, including: what we consider ‘data’ to be; the principles and practicalities of openly sharing sensitive data while maintaining ethical and legal compliance; and practical strategies for sharing sensitive data. We will also discuss some real case studies of researchers sharing the sensitive data they have collected.

Outcomes

Participants will:

  • Understand the pros and cons of open data sharing;
  • Understand the issues related to sharing sensitive and qualitative data;
  • Develop an awareness of techniques and methods for making sensitive and qualitative data open.

Contributors

  • Dr Jim Uttley is a Senior Lecturer in Architectural Science with a background in Psychology and Behavioural Science. He is also Chair of the Open Research Working Group and Deputy Director of the SPEL (Space, Place, Environment and Liveability) Pathway for the White Rose DTP.
  • Dr Jenni Adams is a Research Associate on the MORPHSS (Materialising Open Research Practices in the Humanities and Social Sciences) project. A collaboration between the Universities of Cambridge, Coventry, Sheffield and Southampton, the project seeks to surface and document open practices in the Humanities and Social Sciences and to create guidelines and frameworks to encourage adoption of open practices in these disciplines.
